SUP, Kayak and Windsurf on the Southern Black Sea: Where, What It Costs, How to Start

The Black Sea is unfairly underrated for paddle sports. There are no tides, no dangerous inshore currents, and in the morning the water is often so flat it looks like a lake. That makes it one of the easiest places in Europe to stand on a board for the first time.
This article covers the engine-free sports — stand-up paddleboarding, sea kayaking and windsurfing. For jet skis, parasailing and towed rides see the water sports guide.
The single most useful rule: time of day
- SUP and kayak — early morning. Between sunrise and about 10:00 the sea is usually glassy. After midday a thermal breeze builds and the same route becomes hard work.
- Windsurf — afternoon. In summer the breeze fills in between 13:00 and 18:00, which is exactly what you want.
If you only have one morning, spend it paddling, not sailing.
Where to go
Stand-up paddleboarding
- Nessebar's south bay. Launch from the beach and paddle around the peninsula to see the fortress walls from the water — a view you get nowhere else.
- Ravda. Shallow, calm and less busy. A good first-time spot.
- Pomorie bay. Very shallow, warm and long — an ideal beginners' arena.
- Atliman, Kiten. An almost enclosed bay, the calmest water on the coast.
Sea kayaking
- Sveti Vlas to Elenite, a rocky shore with coves visible only from the water.
- Nessebar to Ravda, with a beach stop halfway.
- Sozopol and its islands, on organised tours in calm weather.
Windsurf and kite
- Pomorie bay is the best beginner area in the region: shallow, flat-bottomed and with a steady breeze.
- Sunny Beach has fully equipped schools but heavy traffic on the water in August.
- Gradina, Kavatsite and the area around Sozopol catch more wind and swell — better for the experienced.
- Tsarevo has a surf school that typically runs from mid-June to the end of September.

What the first session feels like
SUP. Standing within twenty minutes, moving confidently within an hour. Start on your knees, stand once the board is gliding, and look at the horizon rather than your feet — almost every fall comes from looking down. If it is windy, paddle into the wind first.
Kayak. Easier than SUP on day one because the centre of gravity is low. The classic mistake is paddling with the arms only; rotation comes from the torso.
Windsurf. The hardest of the three. The first hour goes on lifting the sail; real sailing arrives in hour three or four. That curve is normal.
When the season runs
| Month | Sea temperature | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| May | around 17–19 °C | wetsuit needed; good wind |
| June | around 21–23 °C | excellent for everything |
| July | around 24–26 °C | SUP early, sailing late |
| August | around 25–27 °C | warmest and busiest |
| September | around 22–24 °C | the best month overall |
| October | around 18–20 °C | wetsuit; strong wind, empty water |
September is the best month for paddle sports: warm water, steady wind, empty beaches. See the coast month by month.
Safety, briefly and seriously
- Always wear the leash. Separated from the board in wind, it travels faster than you swim.
- Beware offshore wind. Westerly winds look harmless from the beach but push you out to sea. If the wind blows from the land, stay close in.
- Respect the buoy line. The first 200 m is the swimming zone; beyond it run boats and jet skis.
- A red flag means no entry. Do not test it.
- Buoyancy aid for children, regardless of what the rental operator says.

What to bring
High-factor sunscreen (light reflected off the water burns twice as fast), a hat with a cord, a UV rash vest, a waterproof phone pouch and water.
Fitting it into the holiday
The most practical pattern is SUP in the morning, beach at midday, windsurf in the afternoon. Based in Nessebar or Ravda, all of it sits within a few kilometres — see available apartments, the interactive map, the Nessebar guide and the beach guide.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
You need to be comfortable in deep water. A buoyancy aid is compulsory for children and strongly advised for weak swimmers.
What age can a child start SUP?
Usually around eight for solo paddling in calm water with a buoyancy aid. Younger children can ride seated on a parent's board.
Can I paddle the Ropotamo river?
The river lies in a reserve with a special protection regime, where organised boat trips are offered rather than free paddling. Do not take a private board in; check the rules locally.
Is the Black Sea good for real surfing?
Waves arrive mainly in autumn and winter, not in August. Summer here is a paddling sea, not a surfing one.
