Sunny Beach (Slanchev Bryag) is the largest seaside resort in Bulgaria and one of the biggest on the entire Black Sea: a single, almost unbroken arc of fine golden sand running roughly 8 kilometres along the bay between Sveti Vlas in the north and the Old Nessebar peninsula in the south. Behind that beach stands a dense city of hotels, apartment complexes, aquaparks, restaurants and a famously loud nightlife strip. Built from the 1950s as a planned socialist resort and massively expanded after 2000, it now sleeps hundreds of thousands at peak season.
The mistake first-timers make is treating Sunny Beach as one place. It is not. The resort is strongly zoned, and where you stay decides what kind of holiday you have. This guide breaks it down.
The Beach: Bulgaria's Longest
The headline is the sand. The beach is Blue Flag in its main sections, gently shelving, with calm water sheltered by the wide bay — genuinely one of the best family beaches in Europe. It is divided into named sections, and conditions vary along its length:
- North end (towards Sveti Vlas): quieter, wider, more family-oriented, near the newer complexes.
- Centre: busiest, backed by the nightlife strip, sunbeds packed by mid-morning in August.
- South end (towards Nessebar): transitions towards the old resort and the dunes near the river mouth.
Sunbeds and umbrellas in the organised sections run roughly 4-6 € each per day; there are also free stretches if you bring your own.
The Zones: Where to Stay
North End — Family Territory
The northern third, shading into Sveti Vlas, is the calmer, greener, more residential end. Newer apartment complexes with pools, a wider quieter beach, and a short hop from the aquaparks. This is where families with young children should aim.
Central Strip — The Party Zone
The middle of the resort is the famous nightlife district: the main strip lined with clubs, bars, neon, караоке, fast food and street promoters. Clubs like the big open-air venues run until 04:00-06:00 in high summer. Stay here only if nightlife is the point of your trip; otherwise the bass will find you.
South End — Older Resort & Dunes
The southern third, towards Nessebar, holds some of the original 1960s-70s hotels alongside newer builds, and gives easy access to Old Nessebar and the protected dunes near the Hadzhiyska river mouth.
Aquaparks and Family Attractions
Sunny Beach is unusually rich in water parks:
- Aqua Paradise — the largest, on the edge of the resort towards Nessebar, with dozens of slides, a lazy river and kids' zones. Day tickets roughly 20-30 € for adults, less for children; transfer buses from the resort.
- Action Aquapark — central, easy to reach on foot from many complexes.
- Nemo Dolphinarium-style shows and aqua attractions in and near the resort.
Add boat trips, jet skis, parasailing, bungee, go-karts and a permanent funfair atmosphere along the central strip.
Nightlife
This is what Sunny Beach is internationally famous (and sometimes infamous) for. The central strip and the seafront alley host the headline clubs and beach bars, with foam parties, live DJs and all-night dancing in July-August. Drinks are cheap by Western European standards — a beer 1,5-2,5 €, cocktails 4-7 € in the clubs. If you want it, it is one of the cheapest big-club party destinations in Europe. If you do not, stay at the north end or in neighbouring Sveti Vlas or Ravda.
Eating
Food ranges from cheap-and-cheerful to genuinely good:
- Mehanas (Bulgarian taverns) for grilled meats, kebapche, kavarma and salads — often the best value at 8-13 € a main.
- International strips of pizza, sushi, steak and seafood.
- Beachfront restaurants with sea views (premium prices).
- Big supermarkets — there is a large Lidl on the resort edge, plus T-Market and many minimarkets — for self-catering, which is how apartment-stayers keep costs down.
Getting There and Around
- Burgas Airport is about 35 km away, roughly 40-50 minutes by transfer or taxi.
- The coastal bus line links Sunny Beach with Sveti Vlas, Nessebar and Burgas frequently and cheaply.
- Within the resort, a little road train trundles along the main road in season, and most things are walkable.
- Old Nessebar is a 10-minute bus ride or a long beach walk south.
Who Sunny Beach Suits
- Young groups and party travellers: central strip — unbeatable value nightlife.
- Families: north end or south end, near the aquaparks, away from the strip.
- Budget beach holidays: the resort offers some of the cheapest sun-sand packages in Europe.
- Couples wanting quiet: consider neighbouring Sveti Vlas or Ravda instead, and visit Sunny Beach for the day.
A Sample Day
Beach in the morning before the sun is brutal, lunch at a mehana, an afternoon at Aqua Paradise or back on the sand, dinner on the seafront, and then — depending entirely on which zone and which holiday you chose — either an early night at the north end or a long one on the strip.
Sunny Beach is enormous, loud, cheap and genuinely fun if you stay in the right zone for your group. Choose your end of the 8 km wisely and it delivers exactly the holiday you wanted.
