Nesebar vs Sozopol — Which Old Town Should You Visit

Bulgaria's Black Sea coast has two ancient towns on rocky peninsulas: Nesebar and Sozopol. Both have old churches, stone-and-timber houses and museums full of finds from antiquity, but they are quite different in character. Here is the distance between them, how to get from one to the other by bus, what sets them apart, and what the museums cost in 2026.
Distance Between Nesebar and Sozopol
The two towns sit on opposite sides of Burgas Bay. Burgas is in between, so the road goes through it.
| Route | By road | Drive time without traffic |
|---|---|---|
| Old Nesebar – Sozopol | about 70 km | about 1 h 15 min |
| Sunny Beach – Sozopol | about 70 km | about 1 h 15 min |
| Old Nesebar – Burgas (centre) | about 38 km | about 40 min |
| Sozopol – Burgas (centre) | about 34 km | about 37 min |
The distances and times were calculated with the OSRM router on OpenStreetMap data in October 2026. They do not include traffic, and in summer the drive around Burgas usually takes longer. In a straight line across the bay the two towns are about 27 km apart. The official figures are close: Sozopol Municipality says the town is 34 km from Burgas, and the Nesebar Municipality's official tourism site says Burgas railway station is 35 km from Nesebar.
By Bus: Always Via Burgas
There is no direct Nesebar – Sozopol bus. The 2026 summer timetable of the Sunny Beach bus station does not include Sozopol. You change at the South bus station (Avtogara Yug) in Burgas:

- Burgas – Sozopol. Buses leave from the South bus station, bay 5. According to the timetable on burgasbus.info, Burgasbus runs every day, hourly, from about 6:00 to 20:00. Sozopolbus runs on weekdays every half hour from 6:30 to 19:30. Passes on this route are valid only on the services of the operator that sold them.

History and Status
Nesebar has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1983 as the "Ancient City of Nessebar", under criteria (iii) and (iv). According to UNESCO the site is more than 3,000 years old. It began as a Thracian settlement (Menebria) and became a Greek colony at the beginning of the 6th century BC. Its remains include the acropolis, a temple of Apollo, an agora and a wall from the Thracian fortifications. The Ancient Nessebar Museum writes that, according to legend, the town once had about 40 churches, and that 23 of them are documented today. Because of its well-preserved churches from the 13th–14th centuries, Nesebar has been called "the Bulgarian Ravenna".
Sozopol is not on the World Heritage List, nor on Bulgaria's Tentative List for UNESCO. According to Sozopol Municipality, the town was founded in 610 BC as a Greek colony of settlers from Miletus, under the name Apollonia Pontica. The municipality calls it the oldest town on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The Archaeological Museum in Sozopol was founded in 1978 and holds a collection of 120 intact amphorae. The town also has the "Southern Fortress Wall and Tower" museum complex at 50 Milet Street.

Atmosphere and Events
Nesebar is right next to the Sunny Beach resort, which is in the same municipality. That is why there are many hotels, restaurants and much nightlife around the Old Town. If you want quieter streets, walk through the Old Town early in the morning or in the evening.
Sozopol hosts the Apollonia Arts Festival. In 2026 it ran from 27 August to 6 September, for the 42nd time, with concerts, theatre, film, exhibitions and literary evenings. If you like festivals, plan your visit for late August.
Beaches
Nesebar: north of the town begins the long beach of Sunny Beach.
Sozopol: Sozopol Municipality lists the Central Beach, Harmani beach (south of the Old Town), Gradina – Zlatna Ribka, Kavatsi and Smokinya.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Nesebar if you want to see a UNESCO site with many medieval churches in a small area and like having a big resort nearby.
Choose Sozopol if you want a quieter stay away from the big resort, or you will be travelling during the Apollonia festival.
Best option: visit both. By car via Burgas the trip takes about an hour and a quarter each way. By bus, add the time for the change in Burgas; the official timetables do not give journey times.
