Emergency Contacts and Useful Numbers for Nesebar Visitors

Stay Prepared — Essential Numbers and Information
Nesebar and Sunny Beach are calm places for a holiday, but it helps to know whom to call and where to go if something happens. Save these numbers to your phone before your trip. Everything below was checked against official sources in October 2026.
Emergency Numbers
- 112 — the single European emergency number for ambulance, fire and police. It is dialled without an area code, is free and works around the clock. One of the six regional 112 centres is in Burgas.
- 150 (ambulance), 160 (fire) and 166 (police) — the old numbers still work, but since 30 September 2011 calls to them go to the 112 centres.
- 146 — roadside assistance from the Union of Bulgarian Motorists, 24 hours a day from a mobile phone. From any phone you can also call 02 91146.
Sea rescue services are also reached through 112. People with hearing or speech impairments can contact 112 in writing through the web app at 112.mvr.bg.
Emergency Medical Help in Nesebar and Sunny Beach
The most common questions are where the emergency service is in Nesebar and whether Sunny Beach has an emergency department. Here is what exists locally:
- Ambulance: call 112. Nesebar's emergency medical service has temporarily moved to Sunny Beach, into the medical centre building (the former resort polyclinic, next to the police). That is what the Municipal Health House information of June 2024 says. Press reports from July 2026 say it is still there while the Health House is being renovated.
- Nesebar has no general hospital with an emergency department. The municipality lists a medical centre in Sunny Beach, health posts in Obzor, Sveti Vlas and Ravda, and the Municipal Health House in Nesebar.
- Municipal Health House — 11 Ivan Vazov Street, Nesebar, tel. +359 554 43155. According to the municipality it houses consulting rooms for all kinds of specialist practices.
Hospitals in the Region
- UMBAL Burgas (University Hospital) — 73 Stefan Stambolov Blvd, Burgas. It has a multi-profile emergency department. Patient reception: 056 894-729 and 056 894-730. Patients who consider themselves urgent cases, or who arrive by ambulance, are examined free of charge.
- MBAL Pomorie — 1 Parashkev Stoyanov Street, Pomorie, reception 0596 2 22 83. We found no official confirmation that it has an emergency department, so in an emergency call 112.
Health Insurance
- EU citizens: with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) you receive medically necessary care in the public system. A doctor's visit in outpatient care carries a user fee, which the European Commission gives as €1.48 and which is not refunded. Treatment in hospitals that have a contract with the National Health Insurance Fund is free when you show a valid card. Ambulance transport is free only in emergencies. The hotline is 0800 14 800.
- UK citizens need a GHIC or EHIC. The UK government warns that foreign tourists have sometimes been overcharged in private clinics in the resorts. If you use private medical services, agree the price in advance.
- Everyone else: travel insurance with medical cover is the safest option.
Police and Fire Service
- Nesebar Police Station (RU Nesebar) — 7 Chayka district, Nesebar, tel. 0554 3 54 11.
- Nesebar Fire Station (RSPBZN Nesebar) — 128 Kamelia district, Nesebar, tel. 0554 24018.
- Theft: report it to the police. You will need the report for your insurer.
- Lost passport: report it to the police and contact your embassy.
Embassies and Consulates
- Germany: the embassy is in Sofia, 25 Frédéric Joliot-Curie Street, tel. +359 2 91 83 80. The honorary consulate in Varna covers the Dobrich, Varna and Burgas regions, tel. +359 52 69 36 93.
- United Kingdom: the embassy is in Sofia, 9 Moskovska Street. In an emergency you contact it through the contact form on gov.uk. The Foreign Office in London also has a 24-hour line: +44 20 7008 5000.
- Other countries: most embassies are in Sofia. Check your foreign ministry's website for its emergency number.
Beach Safety
Since 2024 the beach rules are set by the Ordinance on Water Rescue (Council of Ministers Decree No. 82 of 3 April 2024), which replaced the old ordinance from 1996. Lifeguard cover on designated bathing areas runs from 1 June to 30 September, every day from 9:00 to 18:30. Swimmers must obey the flags:
| Flag | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Green | Swimming allowed. |
| Yellow | Swimming allowed with extra care. No floating or inflatable objects in the water. |
| Red | Swimming prohibited. |
| Red and yellow | Start and end of the fully guarded stretch of beach. |
| Black and white | Entry and exit zone for recreational craft. |
Swim only in the guarded zone and while lifeguards are on duty. If you see someone in trouble at sea, call 112. The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Varna keeps a 24-hour watch, including on VHF channel 16.
Natural Hazards
- Jellyfish: a scientific review of stings from European jellyfish (Marine Drugs, 2016) recommends vinegar only for two species, Carybdea marsupialis and Chrysaora hysoscella. The barrel jellyfish (Rhizostoma pulmo), which the same review lists for the Black Sea, is not one of them. The review advises rinsing the sting with seawater, not fresh water, and then holding it in hot water at 42–45 °C for about 30 minutes. If the pain does not ease or you feel generally unwell, see a doctor.
- Sun and heat: in the summer months drink plenty of water, use sunscreen and avoid the midday sun.
- Currents and waves: under a yellow or red flag, follow the lifeguards' instructions.
Useful Information
- Tourist information centres: TIC 1 is at 19 Mesambria Street, tel. +359 554 2 92 70. TIC 2 is in the Artium centre on Zhulieta Shishmanova Square, tel. +359 554 2 92 22. The municipality's official tourism site gives the hours as Tuesday to Saturday, 09:00–18:00. Another municipal site gives the address as 10A Mesambria Street, so check before you go.
- Burgas Airport is 11 km north-east of Burgas. The municipality's official tourism site says it is about 30 km from Nesebar.
- Country code: +359. When calling from abroad, drop the leading zero of the local number. For example, 0554 3 54 11 becomes +359 554 3 54 11.
